Jisoo, from the global K-pop sensation Blackpink, is set to star in the highly anticipated zombie thriller series “Newtopia.” Produced by local streaming platform Coupang Play, the show follows a pair of lovers navigating a zombie-ravaged Seoul. Park Jung-min plays the man who first encounters the outbreak during his compulsory military service, while Jisoo (Kim Ji-soo) stars as his girlfriend, an engineer starting a new job, eagerly awaiting his return. As the couple traverses the city and battles zombie hordes, they strive to reunite.
Coupang Play, the streaming service arm of the Korean e-commerce leader Coupang, has announced that the series is co-written by Han Jin-won, known for co-writing Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning "Parasite," and Ji Ho-jin, the writer behind Disney+’s “A Shop for Killers.” Filming has been completed, and the show, previously known as "Influenza," is slated for release in 2025, with the exact date yet to be announced.
The series marks the TV directing debut of Yoon Sung-hyun, renowned for his 2011 film "Bleak Night" and the action thriller "Time to Hunt."
Jisoo has previously appeared in several cameo roles in Korean TV series and played a prominent part in the 2020 period action-comedy "Snowdrop." She also had a minor role in "Dr. Cheon and the Lost Talisman" and is reported to be attached to "Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint," a multi-part film adaptation of a popular webtoon.
Late last year, Blackpink renewed their group contract with YG Entertainment, the agency that propelled them to global fame. However, the four members chose not to renew their individual contracts. Rose has joined The Black Label, while the other three members have set up their own independent labels and are focusing on solo projects.
